Kunzea Essential Oil 10mL & 100mL
Kunzea ambigua is in the same botanical family as tea tree and eucalyptus, but it smells nothing like either: clean and foresty rather than sharp and medicinal. It grows wild on one windswept corner of Tasmania and almost nowhere else on earth. The whole world produces two to three tonnes of the oil a year, and it is the active at the heart of the Zea Relief range.

Kunzea oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ambigua, an aromatic shrub native to Tasmania and south-eastern Australia. It sits in the Myrtaceae family alongside eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon myrtle. But it smells nothing like them, and its constituent profile is genuinely unusual: the aroma is clean and fresh with a hint of spice. Locals called the plant tick bush for generations. Zea was the first company in the world to build a wellness range around it.
From bush to bottle
Kunzea grows so readily in North-East Tasmania and on the Bass Strait islands that plenty of locals treat it as a weed. It wants poor, sandy soil, and it takes no fertiliser and no spray: the farmers simply leave it to grow. It is still predominantly wild harvested, and plantations are now being established alongside that, so supply can grow without leaning harder on the bush.
A new plant is not simply mown. It is hand cut at 12 months, lightly harvested at 24, and only fully harvested at 36, which gives the root structure time to bind into the sandy soil. After that it is cut one to two times a year, foliage and green branchlets only, so it reshoots and keeps producing.
The bins go straight from the paddock to the still the same day, because Kunzea biomass should not sit overnight. Steam permeates the plant material, the volatile oil lifts with it, and it is condensed and separated. The water for the steam comes from the spring that runs beneath the still house. That is the photo above: our still, working, in a Tasmanian field.
What comes out of the still is not waste. The spent mulch is stacked in the paddock and turned every two to three weeks, and after about four months it has broken down into compost that goes back onto the land.
Here is the part most brands never mention. How long you distil changes what ends up in the bottle. Steam starts coming through the biomass in 25 to 30 minutes, and you can smell the oil lifting off it. But research indicates that running the distillation out to about three hours raises the percentage of the heavier active constituents, viridiflorol among them, from roughly 10% to 17% of the oil. Viridiflorol carries Kunzea’s deep, grounding, balsamic note and is one of the constituents studied for anti-inflammatory activity.
A shorter run is cheaper, gives you more litres per hour, and still lets you call it pure Kunzea oil. We run the full three hours and accept the lower yield, because we would rather have the heavier constituents in the bottle than off the clock. Kunzea is a low yielding plant regardless: a five cubic metre bin of biomass gives only about 5 to 6kg of oil.
Quality and testing
Every batch is tested and carries a certificate of analysis. Recent batches have been tested by Southern Cross University, and the certificate declares the oil 100% natural, with no artificial or nature-identical additions.
Typical specifications. Natural oils vary batch to batch, which is exactly why each one is tested rather than assumed.
Inside the bottle
The fresh, foresty top note, and the reason Kunzea smells like Tasmanian bush rather than a first-aid cabinet.
The clearing, camphoraceous note also found in eucalyptus. Studied for anti-inflammatory activity.
A soft, woody sesquiterpenol that rounds out the aroma.
Kunzea’s grounding, balsamic depth. The constituent our longer distillation is chasing.
Ranges from Zea’s own supplier composition data across batches; a single batch will sit somewhere inside each range. Published research refers to these isolated constituents and is not a claim about an outcome from using this product.
Kunzea ambigua is native to Tasmania and a thin strip of south-eastern Australia. The stands we draw from sit along the north-east coast and the Bass Strait islands, on Pyemmairrener country, where salt wind and poor sandy soil are exactly the conditions the plant wants. Grow it somewhere comfortable and the oil is not the same.

Ways to use it
3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The easiest way in.
A long-loved sauna oil. A few drops on the heat for a refreshing steam.
Pairs beautifully with Eucalyptus, Lemon Myrtle, Fragonia and Nerolina.
One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.
A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.
Its grounding aroma suits the end of the day and slow breathing.
Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.
One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.

Questions, answered
A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ambigua in North-East Tasmania. It is single origin and GC/MS tested, so you can see exactly what is in each batch. Locals knew the plant as tick bush; today it is one of Australia’s most distinctive native oils.
Clean, fresh and foresty with a hint of spice and a soft woody base. It is far less sharp than tea tree and less camphoraceous than eucalyptus, which is why so many people who dislike those two get on with Kunzea.
Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond and patch test first. It is also a long-standing favourite as a sauna oil.
No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil, and never take it internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first. If you want Kunzea on your skin without mixing anything, use the Kunzea Pain Relief Cream, which is registered with the ARTG as a listed medicine (AUST L 360 331).
The 10mL suits diffusing and blending at home. The 100mL is for daily users, practitioners and anyone refilling smaller bottles. If you need 500g or more, get in touch about bulk.
Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Some essential oils are not suitable around certain animals, so check with your vet before diffusing around pets.
The oil is organically sourced and free from harmful pesticides, and every batch carries a certificate of analysis. Recent batches have been tested at Southern Cross University. The certificate declares the oil 100% natural with no artificial or nature-identical additions.
Three years from manufacture. Store it below 30°C away from direct sunlight, and keep the cap on firmly, since the lighter constituents are the first to escape.
